The Agricultural and Food Business Management major prepares you for a wide variety of careers in business with specific emphasis on organizations in food and fiber industries, financial institutions and small companies. Agricultural Communication and Marketing

The Agricultural Communication and Marketing major prepares you for a career in business or marketing for food and agricultural companies. The curriculum provides students a solid background in three core areas including communication studies, business management, and applied agricultural sciences.

Agricultural Education

The Agricultural Education major prepares you for a career educating students and the public about the environment and agriculture. The curriculum teaches students how to motivate, supervise, coach, educate, and train others in a variety of classroom and/or business settings.

Animal Science

The Animal Science major prepares you for business related or hands on careers in the animal industry. The curriculum teaches students about animal breeding, growth, nutrition, physiology, health, behavior, management, welfare, production and food products.

Students can also develop skills in clinical and laboratory procedures, critical and ethical thinking, as well as verbal and written communication.

Applied Economics

The Applied Economics major prepares you for a wide variety of careers in public policy and business analysis including finance, trade, environmental management and more. The curriculum provides a strong background in economic theory and empirical methods. Students select an emphasis area related to their career goals.

Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management

The Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management major prepares you for a career in working to protect and sustain the natural resources of land, water and air. The curriculum provides students with the opportunity to develop a specific area of environmental expertise across the environmental sciences and policy spectrum by allowing students to select a specialized track within the major.

Each track has a strong focus on integrating coursework in the areas of environmental policy, management, communication, and law with the applied aspects of social, physical, and biological sciences.

Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology

The Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology major prepares you to research, plan, and implement the management, protection, and enhancement of fisheries and aquatic resources, wildlife resources, and biological diversity.

The curriculum provides students with a broad science background emphasizing biological and environmental sciences and other coursework needed for careers in fisheries, wildlife, conservation biology as well as other natural resource and environmental fields.

Food Science

The Food Science major prepares you for a career in managing food production and processing facilities; designing, researching and developing new food products; researching and monitoring the microbiological safety of foods; and overseeing the processing of safe, nutritious and attractive foods to be packaged and distributed to meet the needs of consumers. The curriculum applies chemistry, microbiology, and engineering to the study and technology of making foods.

Forest and Natural Resource Management

The Forest and Natural Resource Management major prepares students to plan, implement, and research the management, protection, and sustainable use of forest and related resources, including timber, water, wildlife, recreation, and aesthetic resources. The curriculum allows students to choose between three areas of specialization: Forest Ecosystem Management & Conservation, Park & Protected Area Management, and Urban & Community Forestry.

Nutrition

The Nutrition major prepares you for a career in assessing people’s nutritional needs, developing and implementing nutritional programs, and evaluating their progress. The curriculum offers excellent preparation in the basic sciences as well as liberal education, a background in food science, and a focus on human needs related to nutrition.

Plant Science

In the Plant Science major, students learn about conventional large-scale farming, organic agriculture, new sustainable production practices, medicinal plants, greenhouse management, and turf and lawn management.

You'll do all this in the classroom, online, in greenhouses, in the field, and possibly through study abroad.

Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering

The Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering major prepares you for a career in developing a plan to restore a wetland or contaminated site; developing an instrumentation system to improve quality control in a food processing line; designing a process and equipment to convert biomass into energy and polymers; or working as a sales engineer to develop technical solutions to meet a client's needs. The curriculum provides an education in engineering with a focus on renewable resources, biological systems, and the environment, including issues affecting soil, water, and air.

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems major will teach students the knowledge and problem-solving skills to address complex challenges and opportunities in food systems.

This will be guided by an interest in food and food systems that are sustainable in environmental, economic, and social terms. Students will study food systems in diverse contexts and at different scales.

Sustainable Systems Management

The Sustainable Systems Management major prepares students to enter the workforce with the knowledge and skills to design, assess, implement, and manage systems that advance sustainability, while continuing to meet employer needs for individuals with strong analytical and quantitative skill sets.

SSM majors integrate goals of economic growth and development in global markets through broad course offerings and real-world experiences. Not only will you gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental problem solving, but you will also hone your ability to communicate with stakeholders across various disciplines.
